Self to Text Connections with David Goes to School

Back to School! David Goes to School unit is a great way to Establish or revisit your classroom rules. Have fun in the beginning of the school year doing a self to text connection of David Goes to school by David Shannon and create a behavior anchor chart for the classroom at the same time! Students will have the opportunity to make self to text connections of the book David goes to school so they can really internalize appropriate behavior in class.

Close Read with Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons

Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons. Close reading is a careful and methodical rereading that requires critical thinking about the text. Students must focus on what the author is saying and what his or her purpose is. Students need to pay attention to what the words and the structure of the text are telling us. Within a close read, there must be text dependent questions that require students to go back into the text and search for the answers. These questions should promote students to think about the text and the authors purpose.

Close reading requires students to actually think and understand what they are reading! Pre-school, kindergarten and beginning of the year 1st grade students may not have the necessary foundational skills to tackle a close read. This does not mean they can not be exposed to how to conduct a close read! The sooner we expose students to certain common core terminology and practices, the better.
